Fixed bed reactors for cultivation of animal cells can be applied for a variety of applications such as the production of monoclonal antibodies with hybridoma cells or proteins for diagnostic or therapeutic use with recombinant, mostly anchorage dependent animal cells, as well as for cultivation of tissue cells for artificial organs.
They enable a high volume specific cell density and productivity under low shear conditions due to the immobilization of cells within macro porous carriers. Features and potential of fixed bed reactor systems will be discussed with examples for application.
